Image of the Day: Crescent Lake with Rock
From the National Forest website:
Crescent Lake is a popular recreation lake in
a setting of wooded shorelines, sandy beaches and
brilliant blue-green water. In addition to
fishing for kokanee, lake trout, rainbow and
brown trout, people come to this lake for sailing,
swimming, water skiing, windsurfing, and camping.
Oh - and HAPPY HALLOWEEN everybody!

Today is the first day of Winter here in Central
Oregon. We've been getting about a half inch of
snow in the past 12 hours, with flurries forecast
to continue all day. To think - three days ago I
was wandering around in a t-shirt in downtown Bend,
amongst the trees, bearing their most
gorgeous Fall finery. It was 80 degrees then.
Mother Nature truly is fickle.

Image of the Day: Park lamp with Sun
Park lamp in Drake Park, downtown Bend, OR -
Backlight by the sun, the parklamp seems magically
illuminated. Most interesting about this image however
is the colorful rainbow apparition in the sky below the lamp
head. This is not due to image manipulation, or a freak
hiccup by my camera equipment. In fact, I was
surprised that the little Sony Digicam was even
able to capture those funky colors in the sky.
Rather, it must have been a thin layer of moisture
in the sky, breaking the light, and I was standing at just the right
angle to see it - and capture it.

Image of the Day: Herding Cows, Fort Rock
It's not often anymore that one sees real cowboys
at work. Stopping to admire and photograph the
awesome stone formation that is Fort Rock (see
yesterday's post), I came across this herde of
cows, kicking up the dust while being driven along
a fence and across the road to new feeding grounds
by two hard working cowboys on their horses and
their well-trained dogs.

Image of the Day: Fort Rock
[From the
Oregon State Parks website] Like a desert mirage, this
monolith rises huge out of the barren,
immense flatness of Oregon's high desert.
An enormous near-circle of towering, jagged rock
walls make it seem like a fort. It's an old
shield volcano set in what once was a shallow sea
in prehistoric times. Sandals found in a nearby
cave are the oldest ever discovered in Oregon,
dating back around 9,000 years.

The alert reader will have noticed, that a week
or so ago I promised to put up pictures of my
weekend trip to the
Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge.
Here they finally are now - with a slight delay,
but nonetheless. I must note that the trip, while from
a nature/adventure point-of-view absolutely exhilarating,
from a photography point-of-view it was rather
dissappointing. The sweeping vistas of the endless
flat desert were almost too grand to be
satisfyingly captured on film, and the game
(antelope, mule deer, and even the sage grouse)
were extremely skiddish - due to the fact that
hunting season for the antelope had just ended, and for
the deer had only just begun [insert rant here about
how freaking immoral and wrong it is to allow hunting in a
wildlife refuge].
Nonetheless,
here are the few shots that did turn
out somewhat. If you look real hard, you can even
see a couple of antelope in there....[note to self:
get a big giant wildlife lense as soon as you win
the lottery, or score that next juicy freelance
job].

Image of the Day: Graffiti Face, Seattle
Graffit Face Closeup - Location: Ballard District, Seattle, Washington
October 21, 2003
After a hectic week and a four day visit to Seattle,
I'm finally back.
Noteworties from the trip to the Emerald City were:
My friend Chris, playing at the
EMP Liquid Lounge on Friday night with his band
The Jet City Angels,
successfully asked his girlfriend to marry him by
dropping down on one knee and presenting her with
his grandmother's diamond ring - in front of
the entire audience. She said "YES"....
At the Lounge, I also managed to meet up with
Robert Scoble, Microsoft's Longhorn
Evangelist and quite possibly the world's most
prolific blogger (if you don't believe me, go over
and check out
the blog for yourself...). And although
yelling into eachother's ear over the severe
blasting of rockabilly music from loudspeakers
only 15 feet away isn't exactly my idea of an
inspiring conversation, a good time was had by
everybody nonetheless - or at least so I think.
(Note to Robert: Hey, if you read this -
nice work on the video, btw. I saw the results,
and they were excellent. Very VH1 ...;-)
In search of the
Fremont Market the next day,
I happened by a one-day outdoor sale of a glass
factory. They had the most incredible globes and
eggs and ornaments - and because the check-out line
was around the block, I took pictures instead.
Here's one of a cool globe, with the reflection
of its potential buyer.

A few items for the blog agenda today:
First -
Schwarzenegger is Governor of California.
Somebody please slap me to wake me up from the demented
dream I think I'm having. First bird-brain Shrub (otherwise
known as Prez Bush) fakes the polls to seize power of the
country, now an Austrian bodybuilder and (self-admittedly)
bad actor thinks he's got it in him to run a State.
No wonder this country's economy, health care system,
social security etc etc etc is in shambles.
It's a case of the blind leading the blind ...
Second - I spent last weekend at the
Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, camping
and photographing the beautiful Pronghorn antelope.
After a season of hunting though, the antelope were
more skiddish than usual. I'll find out today if
I got any decent shots of them. A full report and pics
should go up on the site tomorrow or Friday at the
latest.
Third - I just got a new report of yet another
Parity error from a fellow named Shawn, involving
a DLink DWL-520+ adapter - the report has been added
to the
Error Reports page (scroll to the bottom).
And last, but not least - I've finally managed to
pull it together and put up a
gallery of images I shot
around Labor Day in Olympia, Washington. The event
was the Annual Tugboat Races, and serendipitously,
I happened to catch a ride on the biggest, most
powerful boat in the race, the Judi M.
Floodlamp of the tugboat Judi M. in detail.

Image of the Day: A Leaf in Space.
This image was taken last month in Olympia, Washington.
The leaf was floating on the Puget Sound,
rocking gently on the waves, and the rays of the sun
bounced off the mirror surface in a most peculiar
way. Only later, while scanning the image, did I
realize that those reflections look a bit like
stars and galaxies in the vast black of deep space -
and the leaf added a most surreal taste to that.
October 1, 2003
It's getting cooler outside. The leaves are turning
color. The sky is clouded over more often than in
the past few months. It's getting to be Fall. And Ol' Man
Winter is already putting his boots on too.
So what better than to cheer oneself up with some
images of sundrenched beaches! All's you need now
is a hammock, a strawberry daiquiry, and some Bob
Marley tunes...
